hand&#8230;<\/h2>\n<p>Shortly after I got comfortable with my chainsaw, I realized that if I was going to make any kind of headway cutting my own firewood and maintaining my woodlot, I&#8217;d need a way to get heavy logs out of the forest. \u00c2\u00a0I got set up to do this for about $100. <!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>Here&#8217;s what I got:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><a title=\"TSC Logging Chain\" href=\"http:\/\/www.tractorsupply.com\/home-improvement\/hardware\/cable-chain\/chain\/log-chains-high-test-grade-43--3587881\">Logging chain<\/a> &#8211; $52.99<\/li>\n<li><a title=\"TSC Cat 1 Cross Drawbar\" href=\"http:\/\/www.tractorsupply.com\/agriculture-farming-ranching\/3-point-hitch-parts\/other-hitch-parts\/cross-drawbar-category-1-3-4-in-dia--0288975\">3 Point Hitch Cross Drawbar<\/a> &#8211; $26.99<\/li>\n<li><a title=\"TSC HD Clevis\" href=\"http:\/\/www.tractorsupply.com\/agriculture-farming-ranching\/3-point-hitch-parts\/hitch-pins\/straight-clevis-pin-amp-clip-heavy-duty-0268860\">Heavy Duty Clevis<\/a> &#8211; $23.99<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>More logging chains and log tongs are handy to have, but the items above are the essentials. \u00c2\u00a0If you go this route, you&#8217;re out $103.97 plus tax.<\/p>\n<h2>Here&#8217;s how it all works:<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Logging Chain<\/strong> &#8211; Make sure to buy a chain that is rated for the weight your tractor can pull. \u00c2\u00a0A typical logging chain has a different type of hook at each end. \u00c2\u00a0One end is a slip hook, and the other is a grab hook. \u00c2\u00a0Pretty self explanatory, but in case you need some enlightenment, you put the slip hook around the log(s) you&#8217;re moving so the loop slips shut on your cargo. \u00c2\u00a0You use the grab hook to take out the excess slack in the chain. \u00c2\u00a0The narrow throat of this hook lets it lock against the links of the chain.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3 Point Hitch Cross Drawbar <\/strong>&#8211; Attach this to the lift arms of your 3 Point Hitch. \u00c2\u00a0With this type of drawbar, it&#8217;s possible to lift the front of the log off the ground while skidding. \u00c2\u00a0This will let you haul larger\/more logs since the front isn&#8217;t digging into the ground.<\/p>\n<p>That said, while you&#8217;re skidding logs you should set the height limit of your controls so that the hitch never gets above your rear axle. \u00c2\u00a0If you lift something with the hitch above the axle, you risk flipping your tractor over backwards.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Heavy Duty Clevis <\/strong>&#8211; You mount this clevis in any of the holes on the drawbar. \u00c2\u00a0This provides a strong, stable connection point to loop the logging chain through. \u00c2\u00a0Get this as close as possible to the log you&#8217;re skidding.<\/p>\n<h2>Here&#8217;s how to use it:<\/h2>\n<div id=\"attachment_128\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/uncityslicker.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/skid02.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Securing the log with a slip hook.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Loop the slip end of your logging chain around the log you need to move. \u00c2\u00a0I go over then under, letting the weight of the chain keep the hook secured. \u00c2\u00a0At this point, I also remove any slack in the loop that passes around the log.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div sure the slip loop is tight around your cargo, and that the hook is secure.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_130\" style=\"width: 160px\" close as possible. \u00c2\u00a0Pass the grab hook of your log chain through the clevis. \u00c2\u00a0Pull all of the slack through the clevis.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div hook<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Attach the grab hook to the chain links so that there is minimal slack in the chain between the log and the tractor. \u00c2\u00a0Double check the slip hook and the grab hook before pulling.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_132\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-132\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Skid those logs out of there!<\/p><\/div>\n<p>With the chains secured and the area clear, you can skid the logs out of the woods. \u00c2\u00a0Try to travel in straight lines as much as possible. \u00c2\u00a0If you have to turn, make it wide. \u00c2\u00a0Since the log has no way of tracking other than the tractor pulling it, you should be very careful skidding logs near buildings, trees, or anything you don&#8217;t want to crush with 1100lbs. of wood.<\/p>\n<h2>A few more things before I wrap up:<\/h2>\n<p><strong>DO:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Wear steel toe boots whenever logging, skidding, or operating your tractor. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Wear gloves when handling chains or logs. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Plan ahead.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Make sure the area is clear. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Try to get the front end of the log off the ground. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Know the limits of your equipment.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Wear your seatbelt.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>DON&#8217;T:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Skid logs over surfaces you want to keep clean\/nice.<\/li>\n<li>Pull ANYTHING attached to the back of your tractor above the rear axle!<\/li>\n<li>Let your friends ride on the log while you skid it.<\/li>\n<li>Take sharp turns near display
